The Crucial Tool features a full-sized knife that opens with a thumb stud--just like a standard pocketknife. The half-serrated/half-fine-edge blade has razor-sharp cutting power and a blunt tip for prying and scraping. For safety, a liner lock keeps the blade securely in place. These butterfly-style handles also provide easy-grip control over the V-cutter, and their longer length provides better torque. The handles fan out for easy access to the rest of the Crucial Tool's components: the medium flat-head screwdriver, cross-head screwdriver, bottle opener, and carabiner clip. All Components Safely Lock into Place The Crucial Tool is constructed with stainless steel liner locks that keep the components locked into place while they're in the open position. Its sleek look and contemporary green handles aren't just for show, though. The Crucial Tool's stainless steel composition lends durability, so this tool will stand up to the elements and retain its precision and appearance for years to come. A bit too light weight August 27, 2010 steve 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Gerber Crucial has everything you need and nothing you don't. Unfortunately the tools it does have are not very good. Aside from the previously stated issues with the phillips head, the blade really isn't good for much at all it is already quite a short blade and when you split it into straight end and serrated edge there is almost nothing left if you need to cut anything of depth cleanly.
Also the carabiner is right next to the blade and occasionaly gets in the way.
It is suitable for some really basic and lightweight jobs but not for my ever day use.
Time to trade up.
Gerber crucial August 23, 2010 Greenman Great tool for a good price. The Phillips head isn't the best, but had worked for small things so far.
Handy pocket tool August 7, 2010 R. Riggins Great tool to always have with you, Phillips driver is useless, but its still a keeper, never leave home without it cliped to my pocket.
Absolutely Incredible. July 18, 2010 Erich3isAwesome (North Carolina, USA) I'm a professional auto technician for a german manufacturer, and when it comes to tools I know quality and practicality are important. I was looking for a small multitool that could help me in a jam if needed, and this tool is true to its name. All I've got to say is it's incredible. I didn't want some bulky thing in my pocket with nail files, tweezers, and other useless functions. This tool is perfect, its about the size of a pocket knife and has every tool you could need for practical use. The knife is on the outside which is one of my favorite features and the blade is crafted perfectly (and very sharp). The bottle opener is an added plus. I noticed some reviews bashing the philips driver. I don't know if it's that I use tools all day and am more experienced but, the thin philips driver seems to be an engineering marvel. Fits perfectly into many sized screw heads and doesn't budge. No stripping, marring or rounding out. I've owned this tool about 1 year and it still looks pretty new (finish is not peeling). Everything about this tool is awesome to say the least. All I can do is give it what it deserves 5 stars, and recommend it to you whole heartedly.
A few issues to note . . . July 15, 2010 Capt. Scott 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A few issues to note about the Gerber Crucial -
1) Carabiner and Blade are on the same end/axis of knife. If you are using the carabiner for carry, it must be closed before using the blade. Not very efficient. I usually have something I'm holding with one hand and need to be able to grab my knife and open the blade with the other hand without having to open/close other tools. The Carabiner and Blade should be on different axis so as not to interfere with the function of one another.
Or, as another reviewer suggested, the Carabiner should be mounted on the outside and be removable with screws.
2) Calling one tool a Phillips-head screwdriver is a misnomer - It is USELESS for this purpose. The head is as flat as a flat-head screwdriver with two slight indentions on each side that give the impression of a Phillips-head when looking at a picture. The two barely raised edges do not provide any additional gripping surface when turning a screw. It would have been better to offer a second half size smaller and thinner flat-head instead.
A better description would be one flat-tipped and one pointed-tipped screwdriver.
3) It is weightier than a standard pocket knife but shorter than most standard sized multitools.
4) This product is made in China. I know, I should not be surprised, but I expected better from Gerber.
Overall, not a bad concept, but still has some design work needing to be done.
