Product Description Cold Steel Nightshade Series Skean Dhu, Black as a moonless night, silent as the grave, and totally undetectable-these are the qualities that make up the lightweight Nightshade series. Made from Grivory - the latest in fiberglass reinforced plastic, and stronger than even the super tough Zytel - they are UV and heat stabilized, making them impervious to the elements. One of the most unique features of these knives is their handles. They are made from deeply checkered Kraton that has been molded directly to the blade tangs. The use of Kraton in knife handles is a Cold Steel innovation that dates back to the early 1980's. It has been readily copied by most of their competitors because it offers a superior, slightly tacky gripping surface that is unaffected by heat, cold, or moisture. It never rusts, warps, cracks or splits even in the most extreme environments. The Nightshade knives are light enough to be tied, tucked, or taped just about anywhere on one's person. And, since they are impervious to heat, cold, moisture and extreme weather they are a natural to hide both inside and outside your house. They can be hidden virtually everywhere from the hedges and flowerpots in your yard, to the refrigerator, bookshelves, and closets in your house. Keep one in every room of the house, from the laundry room to the bathroom shower! With violent home invasions on the rise a strategically placed Nightshade could save the day, and even your life. Specifications: - Weight: .95 oz. - Thick: 6mm - Blade: 4" - Handle: 3 3/4" long. - Material: Grivory with Kraton grip - Overall: 7 3/4", Mfg No: 92FSD, Manufacturer: Cold Steel, Warranty: Cold Steel stands behind their knives 100%. The fixed blade sheath knives have a five-year warranty to the original owner against defects in materials or workmanship. The folding knives are warranted for one year.

cheap - broken December 14, 2009 hippolytusartemis (Memphis TN) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I ordered this "Skean Dhu" on a lark from Greenvalleyplace, a seller on Amazon. When the product arrived the tip was broken off. The tip is the only sharp part of the product. Without the tip this thing is less threatening than a butter knife or a letter opener. This left me completely underwhelmed by "Grivory" aka polyphthalamide the wonder material which replaced Zytel that Cold Steel uses in so many of these cheap products. It must be fairly fragile to have broken in shipping covered in bubble wrap. Perhaps my product was defective. I do not know. In any case the seller expects me to ship the item back to them with a tracking number and pay shipping. I imagine this will cost almost as much as any refund I might receive. I plan on attempting to dispute it through my card just on principle. At this point money is no longer the issue. My advice if you are curious about purchasing this item would be to buy it in a brick and mortar store so you can return it there. I have also contacted Cold Steel and left word with a manager. I am still waiting to hear back from them. I will update this review if anything positive happens. As for now, I would say this experience was much like lighting ten dollars on fire except in this case, someone got to keep my ten dollars. In that sense buying this product felt more like being robbed.
Very Good Product May 4, 2009 Matthew Wayne Street (Atlanta, GA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
One of the best Cold Steel products I've ever owned. Edge is superb. As well as the rest of the construction. Highly recommended.
review of knife October 20, 2008 Richard Lee 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I like the knife but dislike the metal ring. It distracts and its not oictured.
Effective, But Mildly Dissappointing October 2, 2007 Mitchell Small (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is part of my first experience with Cold Steel products. Not wanting to drop major bucks before I became familiar with the company's quality, I selected a few items I could use but would not be hazardous to my budget if they were flops.
If this is an example, I need not worry, but this item was mildly disappointing.
I was looking for an "executive letter opener" that might serve alternate purposes in an emergency. The catalog states this is not a metal item, so there were no surprises there. The point is needle sharp and easily punches through many layers of cardboard or leather. It will probably do a nice job puncturing your steak, raw or well done, just as well. It did, however, fail to pierce a credit card. That remains my only disappointment with the blade. I would also have liked to see some type of sheath for it.
In terms of my stated use, it did a credible job of opening letters. Unlike a sharpened metal blade, though, the edges were ripped, not cut. The serrations on this blade are more than decoration, they are functional. In addition to piercing cardboard, I could carve it up with the Skean Dhu as well.
The grip knife is wonderfully firm and is definately a non-slip grip. The indent for the thumb is in a natural position and you helps hold the blade in the correct position.
Overall, I would rank this somewhere between a practice knife and a real blade. The point is sharp enough to pierce protective gear, but it may be stopped by a layer of plastic and the edge will cause injury if sliced across skin, but it is far from razor sharp.
While I am slightly disappointed, bearing in mind it's real purpose, I would recommend this to other people with similar needs. Overall, it is well made and lives up to the catalog description.
