1095 is NOT Cro Van...and that's a good thing September 5, 2010 Big Jon (U.S. Army) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The K-Bar sets the standard for big utility knives. All (non-fencing type) fighting blades are compared to it constantly. The blade shape and style are excellent for general purpose or even heavy duty use. It makes a good camp knife that can do anything from opening cans to chopping firewood. (Light chopping is ok, but don't abuse it too much. This is a knife, not a hatchet.)
The description says "1095 Cro Van steel" and that's wrong. Chromium-Vanadium steels are 61xx alloys which are specialty steels used for applications requiring special hardening. Knives are almost never made of 61xx steels because any of the high carbon steels or simple chromium steels work better. These particular knives are made of mildly tempered 1095, which is a simple high carbon steel. 1095 is an excellent choice for this type of knife and the temper is also excellent. This is not a temperamental knife that loses it's temper easily and it's soft enough to sharpen easily. It's very shock resistant and can take heat up to 500 degrees F. without it effecting the temper. Even if you heat it to red hot (1000F or higher) and screw up the temper, it will still be a usable knife after it cools.
A word or caution: This K-Bar will rust if you leave it wet or dirty. It has a coating of paint to keep it from rusting. 1095 is an excellent knife steel that holds a good edge, but it will rust if abused. Keep it lightly oiled if you are in a damp environment to prevent rust. A good way to do that is to heavily oil the leather sheath (which will also help preserve the leather.) If your knife rusts, feel free to sand off the rust. Or... just keep using it. This is a very robust blade so staining or shallow rust are not an issue.
This is a good solid knife for the price.
wow, now this is a knife September 2, 2010 L. Wheeler (Arizona) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I havent used this knife yet, but wow! It looks very sturdy and its a good heavy knife! It came sharp (did the hair test even though i have very light hair and it scraped off the hair and a little skin). Bought it for my survival pack and I am very happy with it. I got the full size, still need to get a smaller one and a folding knife. Im looking to ka bar for those too! They also make a hachet/hand axe. I didnt know that before I purchased another brand. I can see using it to chop smaller trees if necessary, not sure about splitting wood with it though because if you hit it at the wrong angle from a video i have seen it could break! Im sure this will outlast me, and will give it to one of my nephews when im too old to use it anymore!

Great knife for a great deal August 24, 2010 Calvin 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's a knife. It does what it says. It's made of tough steel and it looks good, but the leather handle gets pretty yucky after a day in some sweaty hands. I recommend getting the one with the serrated blade and with the rubber handle.
The sheath on this is pretty nice, but It smells like bacon and I plan on getting a glass filled nylon one.
