Gift for a friend August 23, 2010 Danny Got this for a friend as gift and he loved it. Be careful of the packaging though as this knife is very sharp and he promptly cut himself with it as he was removing it from the cardboard/paper sheath it was in! The cut wasn't bad, so it was actually a funny situation as he remarked at how sharp it was after he cut himself. The weight of the machete is pretty good and Ka-Bar has a reputation for quality. This turned out to be a great gift.
Heavy duty destruction August 12, 2010 Tyler K. Smith Before this kukri, I had owned several of 2 different types of machetes, both relatively low quality. Finally I succumbed to peer pressure from a good friend of mine and threw 45 dollars for a high quality machete. It has only been a little over a day and I can tell you, at least in this instance that peer pressure was good; the Kabar kukri fits so well and comfortable in hand that it feels much less like a work machete and more like a large over-sized knife.
Pros:
Strong durable metal
Factory sharp; actually it comes sharper than a machete ever should be but that is fine with me
Extremely comfortable
Durable handle and blade
Thick and heavy blade
Stitching on sheath is protected from the blade by a thick fold of leather
50 dollars is cheap for the quality of the kukri
Cons:
The leather part of the sheath smells like a bad day on a farm
Heavy and thick blade reduces portability
Although the non-flexing leather backing of the sheath is fine, the movable snapping straps SHOULD NOT BE LEATHER**
The plastic ring on the bottom and the D ring that connects the sheath to the belt loop feel ridiculously cheap.
**The moving leather straps crease, fold, and tear a lot more easily than most would like to admit. I'm thinking of removing the both straps and replacing them with cobra weaved paracord strips (I'll try to post a picture if I ever get to it) or just closely stitched nylon strips if I'm feeling lazy.
Overall the Kabar kukri machete exceeded all my expectations which is very exciting since I already held Kabar in such high esteem. The only thing that really disappoints me is Kabar has ignored the kukri and will most likely never make a more durable tactical sheath. What irks me even more though is how no third party manufacturer has taken over where Kabar left off. Besides my issue with the straps on the sheath (not the whole sheath keep in mind) this knife was just about right on the money.
Great BOB knife or all around camp blade August 6, 2010 Cajun_Chuck Got the Ka-Bar Kukri machete in a few days ago and as with all their products, I was not disappointed. It is beautifully crafted and has a great fit in the hand. Cinched it to the side of a 3-day pack with some paracord and the length was perfect giving it a nice low profile on the bag with the handle within reach if needed on the fly. The sheath is also pretty darn good at what it does, which is hold and protect the blade. It is not a leather crafted sheath, but seriously, I don't really need that for the purpose it will serve. Overall, very happy with the piece and if it craps out on me after some use, you can bet you will see an updated comment on here.
Scary cutting power July 24, 2010 Frances luk I was testing the kukri on a really tough squash on a cutting board. I ended up cutting not only the squash but the cutting board in half too.
The knife is not meant for cooking. But this knife is just a sharp as my $100 shun cooking blade, but this one is built like a tank. Amazing...
Ka-Bar never lets you down July 22, 2010 Stonnie Dennis (Winchester, KY United States) I have a fairly extensive collection of what my wife calls "man stuff". I must say, Ka-Bar never lets me down. Ka-Bar just can't be beat at their price point. This kukri style machete is well made, easy to sharpen and holds an edge very well. The sheath is well made and easily attaches to a belt or pack.
